De Achterhoeker Rob Hammink studeerde, na het behalen van zijn vliegbrevetten, fotografie en journalistiek aan de Hoge School te Utrecht. Als buitenland-correspondent werkte hij 27 jaar in moeilijke gebieden zoals Kashmir, Irak, de diepste binnenlanden van Suriname, de Democratische Republiek Congo en vele andere Afrikaanse naties. Altijd nieuwsgierig naar dat bijzondere verhaal. Tijdens zijn werk stond hij vaak oog in oog met levensbedreigende situaties. Het werd tijd voor een rustiger, overzichtelijker bestaan. Zo werd hij acteur in Indonesië. ,,Als Stadsdichter zie ik het als een enorme uitdaging om bijzondere momenten en kleurrijke Doesburgers vast te leggen. Ok, niet meer in reportages, maar wel in compacte poëzie.”
The world was big and its corners far-flung as I traipsed its breath for my work. With the passage of time, my life has become more compact and intense, much like a syrup thickened by life experiences.
Words and images have always been a reservoir of expression for me, providing me the tools and ammunition to articulate my journey, observation and feelings to the world.
Poems especially, are the perfect exponent of a life concentrate that invite readers to draw on their own experiences and emotions, distilling a concoction that is both personal yet shared. Every poem is thus experienced differently. Same words and phrases but leading to different guises and feelings.
I find this process fascinating, addictive and enriching. For a big part of my life, I wrote and took photographs as an international reporter who traveled millions of miles across hundreds of countries, always unwaveringly curious about cultures, people and landscapes.
